Chapter One

Zero men had responded to her dating profile. True, she had just created the profile earlier that day, but she thought that at least one man would have sent her a message by now. Or maybe just a cute emoji. Wasn’t she worth a winky face? A smiley face?

Sagging in her seat, Heather blinked tiredly at her computer screen. Her cramped office didn’t have any windows, but her door was open and she could see through the hallway windows that it was dark and cloudy outside. She had been in the RayRay Publishing building for thirteen hours, her editing work having been completed a few hours ago.

Heather raised her gaze from her computer when she noticed the janitor walking by her office. Out of his jumpsuit and in his street clothes, he was clearly done for the night. He didn’t glance at her as he walked by; hardly anyone ever did.

She sighed, returning her attention to her dating profile. Creating this stupid thing had just been meant as a joke with her colleagues, all having been bored or something during their lunch break. But now the lack of responses taunted her—made her insides twist and shrink, like they weren’t good enough to take up the space in her body.

She moved her fingers toward the keyboard. She was itching to change something—fix something—on this damn profile, but would her dates see past her lies? She wanted to delete all of the flaws her colleagues had listed—the stuttering, the bland fashion sense…but it was true, and she never liked the idea of lying. She grew up with Catholic parents, after all.

That thought had her gaze darting to the part of her profile that read “interested in men.” Maybe that was the problem. No man would be interested in someone like her, but what about women?

Heather blushed, her heart pounding harder. Dating women. The thought was tantalizing, enthralling. She licked her lips and wondered what it would be like to press them against a woman’s cheek, her jaw, her lips…she shivered delightfully at the thoughts.

Was she gay? Bi? She furrowed her brow, picturing being with a woman and then picturing being with a man. After a few moments, she decided that she was just curious. There was no harm in experimenting with her sexuality—not nowadays, anyway. And as long as her parents never found out, what was the harm?

Heather glanced around her office, and then at the hallway. A strange thrill of embarrassment shot through her—conflicting her—but it also fueled her in a way. She wanted to do this; she wanted to try this, no matter what anyone else thought.

Shaking a little—smiling a lot—she altered her profile to make it so that she was interested in women. And then she waited.

Two minutes later, she got a message from someone named Christie: HEY HEATHER. YOU SEEM LIKE A REALLY SWEET PERSON. YOU WANT TO HANG OUT SOMETIME?

“Yes,” Heather blurted, excitement getting the better of her.
